Meet Our Assembly of Oh So Fine Talent: Zafira Rajan
We’ve just wrapped up our Assembly event - the unconventional convention designed for and facilitated almost entirely by small businesses - and we want to highlight each and every one of our amazing vendors.
Partly because we’re sure the day was a bit of a whirlwind and with lots of new names and faces around, people probably need a bit of a refresh. But also for those who couldn’t come and are still looking for a network of fine individuals that can help them with their small business needs.
So, without further ado, we bring you a brief interview with Zafira Rajan, an expert copywriter and brand messaging strategist who was fundamental to this event being a success and who, we know, can help you grow your empire.
SO, WHO ARE YOU?
I'm Zafira Rajan! A copywriter, brand messaging strategist, obsessive dog mama and unapologetic book n' plant hoarder.
AND WHAT IS IT YOU DO AGAIN?
I run a brand messaging strategy and copywriting consultancy for conscious coaches, health, wellness and lifestyle entrepreneurs.
I support my clients in the elevation and creation of their brands through personality-driven conversion copy that brings their vision to life, and impacts positive change on their audience. My mission is to help them find what makes them unique in their industry and sets them apart, with strong brand messaging and copy that attracts their ideal clients.
Ultimately, my goal is to help wellness entrepreneurs own their stories with power and personality.
HOW EXACTLY DO YOU HELP PEOPLE GET THEIR SHIT TOGETHER?
I help them get the good stuff out of their heads and into words that they love.
Most clients I work with are often overwhelmed by the writing process because they feel too close to it, or feeling like what they envision never translates into copy that sounds like them.
I like to think that I can extract their personality and put it to paper in a way that feels true to who they really are.
WHAT’S YOUR APPROACH TO BUSINESS?
I approach every stage in my business as an experiment. If something doesn't work out, that's cool –– what did I learn from it and what can I take with me for the next step?
I've changed my niche, business model and services several times in response to what I see resonating with clients and as a result of me constantly testing my market. I believe in flexibility and a willingness to roll with change instead of trying to fit everything into a box I've created for myself (ahem – that's why I don't work a 9-5, right? ;)
Secondly –– might sound cliché, but I also approach my business building as community over competition. My biggest source of business is from my "competitors" and I also believe in supporting my clients success beyond copy –– they value having trusted partners and I love growing my community of small business owners that I can also bring into the fold on my projects.
HOW WOULD YOUR CLIENTS DESCRIBE YOU?
Empathetic, holistic, collaborative, reliable, intuitive, organized, trustworthy.
HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START DOING WHAT YOU DO?
Off the side of my desk! I started writing columns for the Daily Hive when I was working a 9-5, managing social media accounts for friends and started gaining clients through people I met through volunteering on the committee of YES! Vancouver. Two years into trying to juggle a full time job and clients, I scaled back to focus on building my business and went all in.
WHAT MADE YOU GO OUT ON YOUR OWN?
It must be in my blood –– my entire family is filled with entrepreneurs who could never stick with tradition for too long.
As soon as I got a taste of what it was like to work with clients 1:1, I was hooked. I realized I was unwilling to throw away time working in jobs that I wasn't in love with, and that life was too short for me to not be able to flex my creative chops all the time.
I wanted to help more people, be in control of my own time and have the flexibility to do it from wherever I wanted. I never classified myself as an introvert until recently, but I know now that that was a huge part of wanting to be able to work from home on my own terms. More than anything, I get bored easily and wanted to create a lifestyle where I'd always be working on something new!
